3) FREE MENTAL HEALTH WORKSHOPS FOR PARENTS:
Mental Health and Substance Use Resource for Parents
The Ministry of Education and Child Care, in partnership with adolescent clinical psychologist Dr. Hayley Watson from Open Parachute, will host three, free virtual sessions for parents, guardians and caregivers that will focus on practical skills you can teach your child and youth (ages 0-19) to prevent substance use and mental health needs. These sessions will build on a previous presentation, which focused on practical conversation tools for speaking about substance use prevention with your children/youth. The previous session is not a pre-requisite for this session.
Key takeaways for participants during this session:
Learn the factors that lead to substance use and mental health needs from a trauma-informed lens
Focus on prevention rather than intervention/response
Applies to parents, guardians and caregivers of all age groups (youth aged 0-5, 6-10, and 11-18)
Learn ways that these skills can be applied to yourself and the rest of your family to support the mental health of parents, guardians and caregivers
Participants must register in advance. Session dates are:
4) LEARNING UPDATES
Our Learning Updates were originally supposed to go home on March 14th, however we have moved the date back to April 7th, as the last two weeks of snow and cold weather have greatly impacted attendance, and as a result assessment opportunities. By pushing the date back, our teachers will have a bit more time to gather the necessary assessment needed to write the next Learning Update.
5) SKATING PERMISSION FORMS
If you have not yet filled out the skating permission forms for your child(ren), please ensure that this is done before your child’s skating trip. All trips are posted to the school calendar. Permission forms were emailed home on January 24th.
6) PARENT PARTICIPATION
A big thank you to all the families for consistently signing up and completing daily tasks throughout the school and Parish. It does not go unnoticed.
If you are unable to attend a volunteer shift, kindly remove yourself from the task with as much notice as possible. If there is more than 24 hours notice, the task can be reposted and hopefully a replacement can be found . If there is less than 24 hours notice, email the parent participation coordinator. Failure to report an absence will result in a no show fee of $25 per missed shift. Three no shows, and the family will be removed from the program and will have to pay out the remaining hours at the cost of $30 per missed regular hour and $60 per missed maintenance hour.
Ad hoc requests are tasks that you did not sign up for on the website or a task that took longer than expected. Please submit these within one month of completion for approval. Anything submitted beyond that date, and approval is at the discretion of the coordinator.
